The Orissa government on Friday decided to replace all electric poles and wires with underground cabling in the three km long grand road connecting the main entrance of the Jagannath temple in Puri. The Rs 18 crore worth project aims at smooth running of the chariots during the annual car festival. Lighting facilities at the Konark sun temple would also be improved with an investment of Rs 21 crore.

Priests of Jagannath temple along with scores of residents of Puri on Wednesday lodged a complaint with police against the municipality for painting the images of the Lord Jagannath on roadside walls in the name of beautification of the city. Under the banner of Sri Jagannath Sena, they also held demonstration in front of the municipality office. The protesters contended that since passers-by are often seen spitting and urinating on roadside walls, the move is bound to hurt the religious sentiments of people. They demanded the authorities to immediately wipe out the images of Lord Jagannath already painted on the walls. By Debabrata Mohapatra, Bhubaneswar
