Certificate Programs
- Fashion design certificates are typically one-year programs and often offer part-time study. They are designed to be less intensive and demanding than two or four-year degrees, but provide basic education in areas such as the fashion business, fashion marketing, fashion and retail management and fashion design. Fashion design certificate programs teach students how to design, sew and select the proper fabric, as well as pattern-making techniques.
Diplomas
- Fashion design diplomas are short-course programs of 12 or 18 months that teach students design and sketching skills and offer classes in fashion design history, fashion theory, business management and garment technology. By acquiring sketching and drawing skills as well as business-related acumen, students are prepared for entry-level positions as assistants in a variety of fashion fields such as retail shops and fashion acquisitions.

Associate's Degree
- An associate's degree in fashion design is a two-year program that teaches students basic and intermediate techniques in the design process, which includes drawing, draping, tailoring and marketing products. Students often create portfolios of their work as samples for job interviews. They also participate in presentation programs, such as the Line Debut at the Parsons the New School for Design, which lets students showcase their work in front of designers, buyers and industry luminaries.
Bachelor's Degree
- Four-year fashion design programs provide a comprehensive education in all aspects of fashion design. Many institutions that offer bachelor's degrees in fashion design provide networking and internship opportunities, and students can tailor programs to provide concentrations in one or two different subject areas, such as merchandising or marketing. Core classes include textiles, fabrics, drawing, graphic design, fabrics, computer design, product line development and illustration. Four-year programs provide the skills necessary for entry-level positions as an assistant in a variety of fashion industries, but also give students the foundational knowledge to someday start their own fashion line.
